This week's guest post is by Georgian Society member, George Meikle, Author of the book, In Praise of Jamaica. His book not only highlights the many positives of Jamaica but also the numerous heroes among us. Here's an excerpt from the book:
"The miracle of Jamaica is that we have survived and overcome 300 years of extreme de-humanisation and cultural deprivation during which African-Jamaicans were treated as little more than chattels to be bought and sold on sugar plantations. The ultimate miracle however, was the developed sense of prestige, distinction and self-hood expressed by Jamaicans during the 20th Century, and in particular, the “extraordinary cultural and scholarly achievement” unleashed by their creative power over the last 50 years since independence."
