The fort was named for Governor Haldane, a former Governor of Jamaica. It was built in 1759 during the Seven Year War (the war between the British against the combined forces of the French and Spanish for dominance in the Caribbean).
Strategically located, the fort commands a view of every direction for miles around, especially out to sea. The shipping port of Port Maria was surrounded by sugar estates such as Llanrumney, Trinity, Quebec, Heywood Hall and Frontier.
The site is of historic significance so plans have been discussed, from time to time, to have the site properly restored and maintained.
